To Morehead City and Beaufort, NC

Well, Saturday was a drag, a long trip on slow country roads and not much scenery before reaching our campground just southwest of Morehead City, NC. We were blessed with no rain until the last bit, coming through Camp Lajeune, a Marine Corps base. We thought we had made a big mistake when we came up to the gate with armed sentries, but apparently it is OK to be "just passing through." We drove about thirty miles through the base, dodging tanks at the tank crossings (we were bigger, but they outweighed us 6 to one). Saturday night was big boomer thunder and lightning and lots of rain, so naturally I had to be in bed with Mom and Dad.

Sunday dawned clear and beautiful and very cool (high sixties, would you believe it!), so we headed southwest to do a loop around on the coast road and barrier islands. Not much to see with all the condos and all but at last we found a public access to the beach and had a nice walk. Lots of kids and dogs (NC is very dog friendly), and I even got to play in the surf.

They also seem to have a strange custom here of buring babies at the beach!

I can see this with bones, but babies?

The islands were a disappointment (except for the beach part), but Beaufort, NC was a real treasure of marinas, waterfront shops and historical houses. Strange thing, we have been to two Beauforts, one in SC and one in NC, and the one in SC is pronounced "Be-you-ferd", but the one in NC is pronounced "Bo-fort." Go figure! The neat thing about the NC version of Beaufort, in addition to the waterfront houses,

was the great ice cream! I got my own cup!

Well, on tomorrow to Hatteras!

Suzie
